This kitchen was decades old and desperately needed an overhaul. The family had limited funds so I recommended painting the cabinetry with a bright white to offset the dark, drab and dated look.
Check out the transformation!
Door cabinets and hardware removed for cleaning
3 coats of Annie Sloan white covered with Annie Sloan Lacquer for durability
Decades of dirt and crime. In need of repairs.
Clean and repaired! Scrubbed counters to match condition of the cabinetry.
Ugly, old, out-of-date and filthy.
Spotless!
More of the same.
More of the same but much better.
Distress details. Subtle, but features are highlighted.
Fresh, bright, clean and inviting. Looks brand new!
Makeover Instructions
Depending on the size of the kitchen, this entire process can take 3 to 5 days, 2 pints of paint and 1 can of lacquer.
Remove cupboard doors and all hardware
Wash well with TSP to remove all grime and dirt, rinse and dry
Paint both sides with 2 coats of paint. This can be done continuously as the first cupboard will be dry when painting the last
Lightly sand with 150 grit to remove any paint drips or rough spots
Sand slightly more around edges and detailing for a distressed look
Finish with 2 coats of Lacquer
Reinstall hardware and hang the cupboards in place et Voila!
Depending on the size of your kitchen, this entire process can take 3 to 5 days, but the transformation is worth it.
Stairs
Removing the carpet revealed basic builder’s stairs with too many staples to count and imperfections galore!
After wood filler and sanding for days, I meticulously painted the risers white and steps dark blue.
Found these great stair treads on Kijiji.
Harlequin Hallway
The hardwood floor in my entrance hallway was looking particularly worn, so I decided to try something new. I love the old rustic look and this harlequin stencil foot the bill. Once painted, I sanded the surface to reveal the wood grain and then added 2 coats of Lacquer. It was a gamble, but I love the result. Is there anything more Parisian than those diamonds of black and white?
